Witness the Divide
I am the traveler lost to the sea,
tossed upon waves that seek to swallow me,
alone in the endless expanse of starless night.
I am the boat urgently
sweeping the water with my light,
fear of impending failure
looming before me.
I am the ocean
holding it all afloat.
The swells, the dips,
the raging, and the calm
are my inhale and my
exhale.
I am you
and you are me.
We are
lost
together.
Every atom
formed into molecules
by our breath.
You are my destination
and the path I run from.
I am your hate
and the nameless thing
that all love hinges on.
We are eons
apart.
Separated by all of
history
and lashed together
by the very
forces we seek to control.
There exists between us
an immutable bond,
a fiery tether—
a gift of the gods—
that we are unable to tear asunder.
As I push you away,
my head bobs below the surface and
I can’t help but seek your hand.
And in saving me from drowning,
you save yourself.
